Although traditional television isn’t that popular in Hong Kong nowadays, it plays an essential role for me, creating many happy moments that will last a lifetime, especially relationships with others and myself.
Television maintains my social life. When I was a primary student, I always rushed home after school to watch my favourite TV animations on time. Classics like Mermaid Melody, Hikaru no Go, Beyblade: Metal Fusion, Bakugan Battle Brawlers were very popular among children. My classmates often discussed how cool were the characters with me. Sometimes boys brought small toys like Beyblades, Bakugans, Battle Spirits cards to school, though it wasn’t allowed. They were so excited to share their collections with each other during breaks, but these noisy boys put away their toys and put books on their desks immediately when teachers or prefects were nearby. I still remember their panic but funny faces. Missing my good old days.
Watching television was a common hobby for all of us in the past. It connected our daily lives and we shared thoughts about our favourite TV shows every day. Thanks to television, many children could build precious friendships and have a joyful and memorable childhood, including myself.
Television also teaches me to treat myself better by enjoying life. I am a big fan of Running Man, a South Korean variety show broadcasting for 11 years since 2010. TVB J2 has broadcasted this programme for years. It is now aired every Wednesday, but only for episodes aired months ago in South Korea. For me, this not up-to-date broadcasting schedule gives me a sense of ceremony. As mentioned above, I rushed home to watch TV after school in the past. This kind of excitement has disappeared from time to time as we can watch any TV programmes online anytime, but the television broadcasting of Running Man connects to and recalls my nostalgic past. At that time, an old-fashioned thought popped into my mind — I should spend an hour every Wednesday to be a couch potato and enjoy this old-school thing.
Of course, the show is very entertaining, but more than that is the satisfaction brought by the sense of ceremony when enjoying this nostalgic living style. It gives me a chance to sneak a break from busy work, which somehow is quite helpful for releasing stress and recharging myself.
Another unexpected thing about television is that it plays a significant role in my romantic relationship. When my boyfriend was still my friend, we accidentally knew that both of us enjoyed watching TV. We started talking a lot about this collective memory. We discussed and roasted plots of TV dramas, complained about no friends watching television anymore and shared our childhood memories about television. Thanks to television, though out of my expectation.
Television affects me all the time. It connects my past, present and hopefully my future. More importantly, it brings me many unforgettable moments, important values and precious relationships that I could never abandon.
Connections never easily break once formed.
