Unlike male superheroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Scarlett Johansson was always being asked about Black Widow, the female hero’s sexy image and the bodyline of the actress in past interviews and press conferences. I love her replies to these nonsense questions. Believe me, the ridiculous underwear part in this video will impress you. Let’s watch her interesting and high-EQ responses:
“Is it inappropriate?” “To ask somebody what kind of underpants they’re wearing?” I like the way she fought back LOL. Do you think the reporter showed respect to Johansson when he asked this question? It is not the first time that Johansson was being sexualized. While Marvel male actors were sharing their insights into “existential questions” and interpretations of different characters, Johansson received questions limited to her outer beauty. Why did so many reporters only ask Johansson things about “sexy” and “hot”? Like what she said in the video, “Really? Have you seen Chris Hemsworth?”
The only thing the media was interested in was Johansson’s body, completely ignoring her acting talents. These people imposed an idea on the public that “focusing on being sexy” should be the actress’s only important thing in her acting career. This kind of stereotype is related to sexism.
Not only Scarlett Johansson suffered from sexism, but also many people in the world encountered the same issue. I found that more and more people were working on improving gender inequality. For instance, the Asian and foreign movie industries have produced more films discussing the gender issue in recent years, such as Kim Ji-young: Born 1982, Battle of the Sexes and I am Not an Easy Man. All these films talked about how ingrained sexism affected our values and, at the same time, advocated people paying more attention to the problem in our daily lives.
However, I don’t really see any significant changes at the moment. Let’s take spy movies as an example. Have you ever noticed that female spies were usually responsible for seduction jobs to complete their killing missions in these films, just like Jennifer Lawrence in Red Sparrow? Have you ever found that male agents used the same method to get their jobs done in a serious spy movie? Not really. But why?
Can you imagine the scene where Tom Cruise dressed sexily and struck hot poses to seduce a rich woman in order to complete his mission? It seemed to be funny for many of us. Not because the man is Tom Cruise, but Tom Cruise is a man. Men were not supposed to do so in our thoughts.
This is stereotype. Sexism is ingrained in us.
Scarlett Johansson was not the only person suffering from sexism. There are millions of other victims around the world, no matter which gender. They are enduring severe gender discrimination in silence. Emma Watson, the United Nations (UN) Women Goodwill Ambassador said, “I think my work with the UN has probably made me even more aware of the problems. I went out for a work dinner recently. It was seven men…and me.” Although many parties are dealing with the issue, we need to do a lot more to really tackle gender inequality.
